Our trained security and stewarding teams are here to keep you safe and informed. Please cooperate fully with all security personnel and follow their instructions – they are there to protect you and help ensure the Games run smoothly.
Prohibited and restricted items for spectators
To keep everyone safe, the following rules apply at all Orkney 2025 venues:
Bag size & inspection:
- Only one bag per person is allowed.
- Bags must not exceed 25 litres (50cm H x 30cm W x 20cm D).
- All bags will be inspected at entry points.
- There are no bag storage facilities on site.
Prohibited items
You must not bring the following into any Orkney 2025 venue:
- Any item illegal under UK law
- Offensive weapons, knives, martial arts weapons, and batons.
Exceptions: Kirpan (with other Sikh articles of faith) and sgian-dubh (as part of traditional Scottish dress) - Smoking or vaping devices
- Firearms (including replicas or hoax items)
- Fireworks, flares, or other pyrotechnic devices
- Incapacitant sprays (e.g. pepper spray)
- Materials with offensive messaging (e.g. on banners, flags, or clothing)
- Alcohol (unless purchased within the venue)
- Clothing or items intended for ambush marketing
- Animals: only certified assistance dogs allowed.
- Bicycles or wheeled items (exception: mobility aids)
- Portable oxygen cylinders (unless for medical use)
- Glass bottles or containers
- Laser pointers, strobe lights, or similar devices
- Unauthorised noise-making devices
- Protest items (unless pre-approved by organisers or Police)
- Drones, walkie talkies, radio jammers, or scanning devices
- Flammable substances, liquids, or fuel (no naked flames)
Security staff reserve the right to confiscate prohibited items and refuse entry. This list is subject to change.
Behaviour and conduct
- Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. This includes aggressive conduct, verbal abuse, or throwing objects. Anyone behaving in this way will be removed from the Games and may be reported to the police.
- Flares, smoke devices and pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited. Anyone found in possession will be denied entry or removed from the venue and may face prosecution.
- Alcohol and drugs: Anyone appearing under the influence will not be allowed entry or may be ejected.
- Smoking and vaping: Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is prohibited in all indoor areas and designated no-smoking zones.
Medical and accessibility considerations
Exceptions to our bag policy will be made for those with medical requirements or accessibility needs.

Be Safe, Be Aware
To help you enjoy the Games safely, we encourage you to:
- Arrive early to help with smooth entry.
- Limit the number of personal items you bring with you.
- Report anything suspicious to a steward, volunteer, or police officer immediately.
- In an emergency, call 999 and alert the nearest Games official or security team member.
- Do not leave bags unattended and never agree to look after someone else’s belongings.
- Stay calm and follow instructions from staff if there is an incident.
Remember: the likelihood of being caught in a terrorism-related incident is low – but staying alert helps us keep everyone safe. If you are caught in a critical situation: Run, Hide, Tell.
