Pickaquoy Centre

The Pickaquoy Centre, known locally as “Picky” will be a pivotal venue at the Orkney 2025 International Island Games, hosting six sports: Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Cycling (Mountain Bike), Squash, and Swimming. The Centre is at the heart of so many community facilities on Orkney, sporting and beyond.

Located in Kirkwall town centre Kirkwall Pier and a short drive from the airport and can be accessed by foot, bus or car from the pier. The Pickaquoy Centre, known locally as the ‘Picky’ is recognised as a first- class sports facility and was opened in 1999.

Archery

  • Outdoor grass shooting area located on the Pickaquoy Rugby/Football pitches approximately 300 metres from the main Pickaquoy building.
  • 12 covered Gazebo/Tents with seating, giving shelter for use by Archers & Judges
  • Designated spectator area
  • Onsite storage facilities for targets & individual Archery equipment.

Athletics

  • A floodlit, all-weather 400m, six-lane track/eight sprint lanes with two javelin runways, one triple/long jump pit, and one shot put circle.

Badminton

  • The Picky has 8 wooden semi-sprung flooring courts, 6 of which will be used for the competition, overlaid with badminton court mats. Spectator seating will be made available on viewing balconies as well as courtside.

Cycling (Mountain Bike)

  • Work is underway to create a dedicated mountain bike track on the hills close to Picky. Further details of this exciting project will be available as the plans progress.

Squash

  • The Picky has three glass-backed courts, identical to those featured at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with retractable walls allowing two double courts to be created. There are also two spectator areas – a seating area directly in front of the centre court and a balcony overhead that gives spectators a great view of all the action.

Swimming

  • A six-lane 25 metre swimming pool with a moveable floor.
  • A tiered spectator seating area overlooking the main pool.
  • A glazed spectator seating area overlooking the leisure pool.
  • A relaxing Health Suite including a sauna, steam room, and spa.
  • Village style changing area.
  • Private showering cubicles.

  • Catering - serving hot and cold drinks and light refreshments
  • Separate licensed bar
  • Dedicated car park & bicycle parking
  • Secure storage for equipment overnight
